Femicide and Impunity

The infographic shows the seriousness of a problem shared between the European Union and Latin America: feminicide and the impunity. With this booklet, we inform the multiple violence that women suffer, and the barriers they are facing in accessing to justice #WeWantUsAlive
1

Context

I think a lot of what goes wrong with design clients happens in communication. When I started working with this new client, EU-LAT Network, they asked me to make an infographic about femicide in Latin America.

When I started working with this new client, EU-LAT Network, they asked me to make an infographic about femicide in Latin America.

2

Issue

My meeting with the client was to discuss style options. However, when I presented the proposal using the style they selected, it wasn’t the right design because it was not targeted at the general public.

The audience for this infographic brochure was the European Congress. Even though they selected a heavier design at the first meeting, the client actually needed a more subtle and formal design while preserving creativity.

3

Learning

The lesson was that I should have investigated more about the context, about the target audience. For this reason, I have a process for communicating clearly with clients from the beginning. Many clients have no understanding of the design process, so I had to teach them about my process and how to be design clients.
4

Outcome

Now, before starting any project, I do a lot of research and ask the client several questions. This allows me to provide a more effective solution. This will enable me to clarify ideas, have clear goals, and focus the design on specific audiences. By using a process, expectations are clear at the start, and any changes or feedback can be handled easily.

Social Media + Infographic

Impunity in #Feminicide sends a message of tolerance and continuity. In Latin America 98% of these crimes go unpunished. Throughout the world, 1 in every 2 murder cases against women was perpetrated by their intimate partner or by a family member.

Multimedia + Social Media

I produced videos to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Another was for International Women’s Day.

1

Goals

EU-LAT's Elimination of violence against women's Day video was aimed at encouraging the European Union to protect women and girls.

EU-LAT's Women's Day video was intended to honor women's leadership during the Covid-19 crisis.

2

Script

The client had overly complicated ideas and a script that would weigh down the video. Together we developed a script that was more focused and planned out the graphics paired with each line of the script.
3

Style Guide

Since they did not have a style guide, I created a style guide that represented the formal tone in a simple, easy-to-understand manner. My illustrations were created by hand, then imported into Illustrator, and my videos were finished using AfterEffects and Premiere.
4

Outcome

Videos were posted to YouTube and Twitter. Nearly 5,000 views have been generated from organic engagement with the videos so far. In addition to these two videos, I also developed a style guide for social media posts, policy briefs, and infographics.

#25N

At the EU-LAT Network we have created this video to commemorate #25N International Day for the Elimination of #Violence against #Women and to call for the EU to take action to protect women and girls.

Follow up on specific cases in which human rights defenders are criminalised in relation to the activities of European companies:
Make public and systematic statements about these cases, show visible support for the work of the defenders affected and make visits to the headquarters of the criminalised organisations or movements. (In order to hear first-hand from the people affected, so that relevant decisions can be made)
Check out Facebook

Observe hearings and trials in cases of defenders who have been prosecuted and/or arbitrarily detained, to verify due process, and visit incarcerated defenders in order to determine and/or demand adequate living conditions and respect for their fundamental rights.

Take a look

Promote an appropriate environment for women human rights defenders to continue their defence work, given that they are exposed to greater risks (sexual violence, criminalisation, stigmatisation and harassment) compared to their male colleagues. In relation to this, we urge the inclusion of a more explicit gender perspective in the guidelines on human rights defenders.
