Mujeres y conflictos ecoterritoriales. Impactos, estrategias, resistencias
is a complete investigation carried out in Peru and Latin America by Rocío Silva Santisteban, which portrays various territory struggles amid the violence of the extractivist development model, and how, especially women, have faced subjugation of economic power in their lives and their places of origin.
I designed the cover and interior for a 190-page book and assisted with print management both in the first and second edition of “Women and Territorial Echo Conflicts: Impacts, strategies, resistance” by congresswomen of Peru, lawyer, journalist, teacher, writer and poet Rocío Silva Santisteban.
This is an analysis of the book
⚡️ Cover
The cover design features a dual image of Andean and Amazonian indigenous women, the protagonists of this book. In this symbiosis, we attempt to depict the tenacious and courageous struggle of those affected by economic interests disrupting their lands, and how they have managed to survive the attacks while transcending the struggle of an entire country to preserve its environment. The book’s protagonists are women in this form of twinning.
⚡️ Interior Design
A panorama of what is far away for many is the reality that Andean and Amazonian women give their lives to protect their lands today and in the future with full-page photographs, newspaper notes, and portraits of their daily struggle. Those who have been harmed by the extractivist onslaught are served by protecting a past that refuses to disappear. It’s been a privilege for the open plans to relieve the struggle of defenders and damage caused in their territories.
Client testimonials

The Results
There were full houses at all presentations, and everyone got a free copy.
There was extensive coverage of the events by local and international media in Peru and Spain. It is an essential resource on extractivism to this day.
How did the design process go?
In the clients’ brief, the idea was to capture the indigenous and Andean woman, showing how her house, which is the environment, is being destroyed by factories who just want money no matter how it hurts people, the environment, and water. It was shown on both the front and back covers of the book.
This book illustrates through photographs how women leaders defend the land and fight against extractivism, raising their voices in protest against extractivism.
My goal was to translate the client’s vision into the book cover illustration and book layout by meeting with and keeping constant feedback from the client.
After the final design of the book was approved, it was my job to find a printer to produce the second edition. In order to ensure that the color was accurate, I tested various colors and chose the appropriate sheet to print on that could hold enough ink for the full-page color photos without showing through.
Following the printing of the book, I created physical and digital designs for a series of presentations with the author in attendance, accompanied by testimonies from women defenders, interventions by state and civil society representatives, projections, and artistic interventions in order to raise awareness of the problem and to gradually destigmatize women defenders in Peru and worldwide.
